Irrespective of religious belief or practice, I do believe that it is irresponsible to allow the wearing of a burqa while in control of a moving vehicle. On a few occasions around my office, I have witnessed firstly a learner driver (two women in burqas) and a few months later, a P-plater (quite likely the same woman who had passed her test) wearing a burqa while driving.
In these days of woeful peripheral vision (due in my opinion to Generation Y's excessive time spent in front of computer screens), surely obstructing that vision even further with by the donning of a garment which obscures your vision is an accident waiting to happen.
I was taught (in my early driving days) that when you enter a car, the first thing you do is adjust your seat, your mirrors, ensure that your vision is not impeded in any way before you start the car and pull out from your parking space.
Long have we bemoaned "Sunday drivers", more often than not, those who wear hats while attending their church of choice or afternoon tea with their friends. Why? Because the hat can interfere with the driver's line of vision!
I'm not wishing for an accident to confirm my concerns, far from it. I hope I am wrong. One thing that did make my day was seeing the flap of fabric caught in the car door frame as the car turned the corner.
